Failed the NCT on Your Headlights? What It Means and What It Costs
Headlamp aim is the single most common reason cars fail the NCT in Ireland. In 2024 alone, 140,602 vehicles failed on it. If you have just come out of a test centre with headlights on your fail sheet, here is what the tester actually found, and what it costs to put right.
The five ways headlights fail the NCT
Beam aim outside tolerance. The beam sits too high, too low, or kicks the wrong way. This is the big one.
Condensation inside the unit. Moisture scatters the beam, so you can fail on aim even when the aim itself is set correctly.
A hazed or yellowed lens. Oxidation cuts the light output and softens the cut-off line the tester is measuring.
A bulb changed and not seated right. Swap a bulb without seating and securing it properly and the beam pattern goes with it.
Damage or a dead DRL. Cracked lens, loose housing, water ingress or a daytime running light that no longer lights.
Why a garage told you they were fine
NCT centres measure headlamp aim on digitally calibrated equipment that reads the beam in degrees of angle. Plenty of garages still check aim by eye against a wall or with an older visual gauge. A car can look perfectly set on one and still be outside tolerance on the other. That is why a headlight can pass a pre-NCT check in the morning and fail the real test in the afternoon.
Condensation is not a cosmetic problem
A misted headlight rarely clears on its own, and it will keep coming back until someone finds where the water is getting in. Left alone it corrodes the reflector and shortens the life of bulbs and LED boards. Drilling a drain hole in the housing, which comes up on every forum, makes it worse by letting more damp air in. The proper repair is to open the unit under controlled heat, dry it out, find the failed seal or cracked housing, and reseal it.
What each fix costs
Headlight alignment, from 50 euro. Fixes a straightforward aim fail.
Headlight polish and restoration, from 100 euro. For hazed or yellowed lenses.
Headlight replacement, from 150 euro. When the unit is past saving.
LED and DRL module repair, from 250 euro. Dead daytime running lights and LED boards.
Advanced headlight repair, from 300 euro. Condensation removal, leak tracing and resealing.
Prices depend on the car and the state of the unit. Send a photo before you travel and we will give you a number.
Get it sorted before the retest
Send us a photo of the headlight on WhatsApp to 087 3300 247, with the make, model and year and a line from your fail sheet. We will tell you what it needs, what it costs and when we can take it. Most aim and restoration jobs are done the same day. We have been repairing headlights for over ten years, on more than a hundred units, and every repair we do is guaranteed.
Where we are
Unit 6, Old Quarry Campus, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15. Handy off the N3 and the M50, so it is a short run from most of Dublin, and we see plenty of cars from Meath and Kildare turning up between a fail and a retest.
