Scratched Headlight? Here's How We Fix It (and What It Costs)

A scratched headlight lens is one of the most common things we see at the workshop. Road debris, careless washing, and even automatic car washes can all leave fine scratches or scuffs on the plastic lens. The good news: most scratches look worse than they are, and can be polished out rather than needing a full replacement.

Is a scratch just cosmetic, or does it matter?

Most light scratches are cosmetic and don't affect how your headlights perform. But deeper scratches can scatter light at night, throwing glare back at you instead of onto the road, and they often let in dirt and moisture that make the lens look worse over time.

DIY kits vs a proper polish

Supermarket scratch-removal kits can help with very light surface scuffs, but they rarely go deep enough for anything more than that, and can leave the lens looking patchy if used unevenly. At the workshop we use a multi-stage compound and polish process that removes the damaged layer evenly and restores real clarity, not just a temporary shine.

When polishing isn't enough

If a scratch has gone right through the coating into the lens itself, or the lens is cracked, polishing won't fix it and the housing will need to be replaced. We'll always tell you honestly which one your headlight needs before we start.
