Headlight Bulb Replacement: DIY vs Professional, and What It Costs

A headlight not lighting up usually means a blown bulb, but whether that's a five-minute job or one for the workshop depends entirely on what's under your bonnet.

Halogen bulbs: usually a straightforward swap

On many cars, a halogen headlight bulb is accessible from the engine bay and can be changed in a few minutes with basic tools. The main things to get right are handling the new bulb without touching the glass (skin oils shorten its life) and reseating the dust cover properly afterwards so moisture can't get in.

LED, xenon and DRL units: usually not a simple swap

Modern LED and xenon headlights, and separate daytime running light (DRL) modules, are often sealed units rather than a bulb you can pull out and replace. Some need the beam re-aimed afterwards, and getting the wrong bulb temperature or output can affect how your headlights read on an NCT test. This is where it's worth having it looked at rather than guessing.

We fit the correct bulb for your headlight, reseal the housing properly, and check the beam is still aimed correctly afterwards. If the fault turns out to be the DRL module or the headlight unit itself rather than the bulb, we'll tell you before doing any work.
