Headlight Restoration: How It Works and How Long It Lasts

Cloudy, yellowed headlights are one of the most common ageing signs on Irish cars. It's not dirt on the surface, it's the plastic lens itself breaking down, and it happens gradually enough that most people don't notice how much light output they've lost.

Why headlights turn yellow

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic with a UV-protective coating on top. Years of sun exposure, road grit and heat break that coating down, and once it's gone the plastic underneath oxidises and turns cloudy or yellow. It's mostly cosmetic at first, but it steadily cuts how much light reaches the road at night.

Why it matters beyond looks

Badly oxidised headlights can scatter and dim your beam significantly, which matters most exactly when you need your headlights most: driving at night or in poor weather. It can also be flagged on an NCT test if the lens is cloudy enough to affect the light output.

DIY kits vs professional restoration

Home restoration kits can improve clarity for a few weeks or months, but without a proper UV-resistant sealant the haze usually comes back quickly. We use a multi-stage compound process followed by a UV-protective coating, which is what actually slows the yellowing down long-term rather than just buffing it out temporarily.

How long it lasts

A professional restoration with sealant typically holds up well for a year or more of normal driving, depending on how much sun exposure the car gets. Parking in a garage or under cover makes a real difference to how long the finish lasts.
